It was 4.10 pm...

Olympic torchOn 6th February the flame had only a short distance to cover to arrive at the Opening Stadium. Having left St-Pierre de Chartreuse at 1 pm it waited a few minutes in the triumphal way because of a slight delay in the progress of the imposing opening ceremony. Alain CALMAT lit a powder torch at the flame because its combustion was surer; he ran across the arena and climbed the steep steps of the high tower without haste, but without slackening his pace. When he arrived at the top he lit the flame font. It was then 4.10pm.

The press and the local television devoted a large place to the progress of the flame. According to certain estimates more than 60,000 lines of text and 1,500 photos were published in the newspapers which reported the event during five or six days, sometimes on several pages. The length of the radio and television broadcasts was about 300 minutes.
